Although we are currently not members of the green tourism scheme our cottages are very 'green'. We encourage recycling with the provision of bins for paper, bottles and tins. We use only low energy lighting in all our cottages and all the electrical appliances are low energy. As all the cottages are recently built they are well insulated and have very good double glazing making them very efficient to heat. We have solar water heating in Rowan Cottage. This year we have erected a 15 Kw wind turbine. It is manufactured by an Irish company C & F Green Energy. This should supply most of the electric required by the cottages and the farm. As we have our own water supply we encourage careful use of water.
On the farm we have hedges and trees which we planted some years ago. The hedges attracted more birds to the farm. This year we have planted 3000 metres of native hedging and 5 acres of native trees. As the site where we planted the trees can be wet at some times of the year we chose to plant Rowan, Alder and Birch these were the species of trees most suited to the site. Once they grow they should provide seeds and berries for the birds in the winter. On the farm we use the manure from our cattle sheds to fertilise our grass fields we only use artificial fertiliser if necessary to rectify some nutrient deficiency.
We could not have asked for a better place for our first stop in Scotland. The veiws are better than we have ever seen.”
